The Makeover Is Complete!

It is December 15th already and this semester will officially end in two days. Yikes, semester has flown by! In the last five months I have learned a thing or two. This class taught me to understating what pop culture is all about. The How, What and Whys of pop culture!

  • Music
  • Video Games
  • Books
  • Ads
  • Social Networking sites
  • Customs
  • Traditions
  • Behavior Patterns
  • Rituals
These are all parts of our pop culture; plus much more. That was just to name a few. To fully understand what pop culture is you have to have a open mind, always pay attention, realize that everything has meaning, be respectful toward things that you don't know or understand and be a active reader. This class helped me a ton!!! With keeping my mind open. I remember my friend Jacob just before school started this fall told me and I quote, " Michelle, you're single minded and on dimensional sometime." Thanks to this class and a great teacher he hasn't said that to me again!

Popular Culture is all around us! Every where we turn; everything we do. Always remember to keep a open mind and even if you can't fix our whole society every little bit counts.

"she has no lines or wrinkles. no scars or blemishes. Indeed she has no pores."

In class we watched Killing Us Softly 3 by Jean Kilbourne it was about advertisement and the objectification of women's body's.

Tell me what is this ad selling? Give up?! I asked my mother and she said, " Well dear at first glance, it looks like they're trying to sell a woman's crotch?" I told her, " Nope! Men's perfume Mommy!"

Why do company's let ads much like this one go up all over the world? If your company is trying to sell to men why in the world would you lower your professional standards as a company to use a woman's crotch to sell a product. Do they not realize the lasting effect these ads have on how women are seen.
"Media objectifies and portrays women as physical objects that can be looked at and acted upon!"

Or how about this picture from a Calvin Klein Ad in which they're selling jeans! Really? They're selling jeans I would have never guessed. The poor women is show in a very passive pose. The men are positioned to have the look of control over her! The one on the right looks as if he's holding her down by her hair; while the other male is straddled over her. It shows what our society perceives are what is right that men are in control of women and can do whatever they please with them! Just look at the statistics! We don't achieve these numbers without some sort of influence and its coming from our media culture!  There was a young man in class that just didn't understand what these pictures meant. He kept saying " It is what it is, its a picture." But its not its so much more!  When you look at this picture maybe not right away but our sub consciences does pick up on what is within these pictures. And if we don't take notice and try to change how women are seen and viewed in our society these statistics are going to keep increasing  Going higher and higher. If you're not willing to look at something with a open mind, much like the young man in class, i don't think you've grasped what is popular culture and how if effect us.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/feb/01/two-killed-northeast-valley-crash-identified/
Take a look at this report below that I found on the Las Vegas Sun website. In February a women and her son were killed all because a young boy was in a HURRY to get home.

Nathan Hardy
The driver of a pickup truck allegedly involved in a fatal crash Friday night that left a woman and her teenage son dead told police he didn’t see a stoplight and was in a hurry to get home, according to an arrest report released today.
Nathan Hardy, 20, was booked on two counts of felony reckless driving resulting in death in connection with the 8:42 p.m. Friday crash that happened at the intersection of Lamb and Las Vegas boulevards.
When interviewed at University Medical Center after the crash, Hardy told the investigating officer he was returning home from a trip to St. George, Utah, and was “just in a hurry to get home.” He couldn’t recall specifics about the crash, the report indicates, and said he didn’t see the traffic light.
He also told police he hadn’t consumed any alcohol or taken any drugs, prescription or otherwise. He said he wasn’t fatigued and that shortly before the crash he had eaten a meal at Jack in the Box.
Police said evidence and witness statements indicate that a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by 45-year-old Maria DelCarmen Lewis, of Las Vegas, was southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard and entered the intersection on a green light. A 1992 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Hardy was southbound on Lamb when it entered the intersection on a red light, striking the passenger's side where Lewis’ 17-year-old son, Daniel Santos, was sitting.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene; Santos died a short time later at University Medical Center. The Clark County Coroner’s office said today that Lewis died of a broken neck as a result of the collision.
Santos was taken to UMC, where he died of multiple traumatic injuries he suffered in the crash, the coroner’s office said. The coroner's office officially ruled both deaths as accidental.
Several witnesses told police the Dodge was weaving in and out of traffic and ran several red lights as it traveled southbound from Craig Road as it approached Lamb.
One witness, a Clark County firefighter who was responding to another accident in the area, told police he saw the Dodge traveling 50 to 60 mph and almost strike several pedestrians in the area of Craig and Lamb.
Other witnesses described the Dodge’s speed as between 60 mph to 80 mph, weaving in and out of traffic, and running red lights at Craig and Lamb, Alexander and Lamb, and the light at Lamb and Las Vegas Boulevard.
Hardy was treated at UMC for minor injuries and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear before a judge Wednesday morning.

Where's the EASY button?

Is America impatient? YES! Absolutely! What happened to America? When did we get so caught up in going so fast? We eat fast, we drive fast, we talk fast, we even work fast! Every day our technology is advancing and we are moving forward as a generation but is it really good for us? For example when you are at your job your excepted to do your job and do it quickly, but when people get impatient they tend to cut corners and look for the easy way out. It's sad to say but our generation is terribly impatient! Have you ever been at a red light; the light turns green the person behind you throws a holy fit laying on their horn just because you didn't go right when the light turned? Well I have plenty of times, and quite frankly it annoys me; where in the world do they have to go in such a hurry that their willing to get mad over two seconds? Another example of how impatient we are: it use to be that when you call someone and they don't answer their phone right away it meant that they were busy, obviously, but not now if they don't answer by the fifth ring it means that you need to hang up and call again and again and again till they answer! Impatience can not only be annoying but it can be bad for our health as well.

The real question is how can we fix our society and its problem with impatience? Truth be told we can't fix our society, but we can improve ourselves. We need to stop hurrying so much. Take our time to do things. Instead of running out somewhere to pick up dinner; stop by the farmers market or store, pick of some groceries and go home and make a nice, home cooked meal. Pick up a book and read it; don't Spark Note the book and take the easy way out. In the end you'll learn so much more by reading the book. At work when your told to complete an assignment take your time and do it right, because if you don't you will end up having to redo it in the end just to make it right. My Mom always always told me, " Michelle, patience is a virtue and if you don't understand it now one day you will and you'll thank me." She was right and I'm glad I was raised to appreciate time and the twenty-four hours I'm given every day!

From Laguna Beach to Jersey Shore the Bachelorette is Dancing with the Stars in her eyes; While Americas Next Top Models are walking down Project Runway with the Iron Chefs!

How does reality television relate to and affect people who watch it?  What makes reality television shows so popular?  What is the largest archetype that you see being used in reality television shows?

I don't watch reality TV! But, I'll try my best to answer the questions using what I've learned from researching, talking to other people, and in class.

I'd say that reality TV in a way relates to everyone, everywhere in some way! But I also think that not every reality show is real. Just look at this website http://www.realitytvworld.com/ the list goes on and on and on and on. Not everyone show on the list is truly not scripted, yet that's beside the point. Looking at the list there is something there for everyone. For every aspect of life no matter how you live yours; whether your a chef or a wanna be model or just a young adult look for a show that relates to you. But how does it affect it's viewers? It affects them in the way that it shows a very shallow, one dimensional view of whats life is. Since its supposedly a "reality show" i looked up the word reality and the mean I received doesn't match what plays out on the screen of a reality TV show. Reality is the state of being real as stated in the dictionary

( http://www.merriam-webster.com/) What they show on those so called " Reality" shows isn't very real. How can people even try to pretend its real? if you have a camera pointing in your face twenty-four seven you're not gonna act the same as you would in the privacy of your own home. You'll watch what you say. Think before you speak. Those are things that don't happen in real life.

What makes it popular? Well its a escape! For thirty minutes of your life you can sit down, turn the TV on and say oh so that is what life is suppose to be like. ( supposedly )

The most commonly seen archetype in reality TV I would have to say is the witchy girl. No matter what show your watching; every single of of them has a mean, witchy girls. It's like our society feels they can't function and create a show unless there is a mean witch faced girl.

In Conclusion "Reality TV" is as fake a barbie doll!

Is it a pumpkin? No, it's a coach!

A brand that has been "religified"? I can think of one, and all it takes is one word. Coach. Coach purses, wallets, hats, scarves, shoes, sunglasses, watches, belts and the lists goes on and on! Every where you look someone has something Coach; whether it's at the mall or walking down the halls of Kirkwood. When you read the list of products that they sell you'd automatically asume they sell mainly to women, but you would be mistaken. Coach has a special line just for men. I've also seen kids carrying Coach bags or wearing Coach shoes; they weren't super young kids but kids none the less. A religified brand that's loved by men, women, teens, and even kids!

PCKCC paige: Religified

PCKCC paige: Religified
I absolutely agree with you! The North Face brand is not only popular because of how warm there products are, but because everyone has a 'North Face' article of clothing. They're devoted to buy a brand that they've never heard of just because someone else is wearing it.
