"she has no lines or wrinkles. no scars or blemishes. Indeed she has no pores."

In class we watched Killing Us Softly 3 by Jean Kilbourne it was about advertisement and the objectification of women's body's.

Tell me what is this ad selling? Give up?! I asked my mother and she said, " Well dear at first glance, it looks like they're trying to sell a woman's crotch?" I told her, " Nope! Men's perfume Mommy!"

Why do company's let ads much like this one go up all over the world? If your company is trying to sell to men why in the world would you lower your professional standards as a company to use a woman's crotch to sell a product. Do they not realize the lasting effect these ads have on how women are seen.
"Media objectifies and portrays women as physical objects that can be looked at and acted upon!"

Or how about this picture from a Calvin Klein Ad in which they're selling jeans! Really? They're selling jeans I would have never guessed. The poor women is show in a very passive pose. The men are positioned to have the look of control over her! The one on the right looks as if he's holding her down by her hair; while the other male is straddled over her. It shows what our society perceives are what is right that men are in control of women and can do whatever they please with them! Just look at the statistics! We don't achieve these numbers without some sort of influence and its coming from our media culture!  There was a young man in class that just didn't understand what these pictures meant. He kept saying " It is what it is, its a picture." But its not its so much more!  When you look at this picture maybe not right away but our sub consciences does pick up on what is within these pictures. And if we don't take notice and try to change how women are seen and viewed in our society these statistics are going to keep increasing  Going higher and higher. If you're not willing to look at something with a open mind, much like the young man in class, i don't think you've grasped what is popular culture and how if effect us.

  1. Wow! I was shocked by the men's cologne ad using a woman's crotch for advertisement. That says a lot... Um, smelling like this will get you in here? I really cant believe that ads such as these are acceptable by society. I have an 8 year old son who has already asked me many questions regarding sex and women's anatomy and it's ads like these and commercials on tv. Have you seen the new Beyonce ad? I really think this is disgusting-just as they banned ads using cartoons to sell cigarettes I think they should ban ads that objectify women to see products, especially if they are marketing towards men.

  2. I know exactly what you mean. I have a six year old brother; sometimes I do not even want to take him place just because I don't want him to see those kinds of things. Having to change the channel on the TV is starting to become a more frequent event now; the ads on TV are just as bad! Even on family TV stations. I didnt have to grow up with all of this. Things that were private stayed private especially when it came to body parts. Now everything goes in ads especially the clothes and the lack of clothes.
