Jim Thorpe vs. Edison Arantes do Nascimento aka Pele’

In class we read and discussed the article, “George Will vs. Nick Hornby” By: Chuck Klosterman. Now, usually in class we sit in our seats and talk about what article we had read that week; what it was about and the effects that the topics has in our society and so forth, but this week we did things a bit different; we split the class into the following three groups: group one “Klosterman is a Genius”, group two “Klosterman is an Idiot” and finally group three which is the “I really don’t care group”; for privacy and safety purposes the names of the students and which group they belonged to will remain anonymous. The way we did thing was in a jury style discussion form, group one (aka Klosterman is a Genius)  spoke and made their points which I have listed below, and when they were finished group two (aka Klosterman is an Idiot) had the floor to make their points; which are also listed below. After each group had made their points, each group was given one last chance to sum up the main idea of their argument and make one last final statement. This is where group three (aka I really don’t care) was finally able to step in and have a turn, because while all the points were being made and the main ideas were being formed, group three was sitting back, taking in everything, and discussing thing amongst themselves, for it was groups three's choice as too who won the battle held that day in class. So go ahead and read the points that each group made and then their concluding statements; then I will tell you who won!
Klosterman is a Genius
o    The sport of soccer is not from America
o    No individual can fail in soccer
o    Soccer is not really a team sport
Or as oriented as football
o    Soccer players are not “Super Humans”
o    You can be penalize the other team for “acting hurt”
o    Soccer is a mediocre sport
o    Who wants to watch a game that only scores 1 to 2 points again, if even that

Final Statement:
Soccer will NEVER be as popular in America as football, baseball or hockey. Soccer is not a superior sport!

Klosterman is an Idiot
o    Soccer has more strategy than it is given credit
o    Even when a player is not active on the field her or she are still involved
o    Soccer has injures just like every sport
o    Soccer players wear no protective equipment
o    In soccer both men and women play and the same rules apply to both sexes
o    Those that perceive it as dumb; probably just suck at it!
o    There star players are secretly
“Super Humans”

Final Statement:
Soccer is an intense, physical game, and it is not given enough credit. Chuck Klosterman is closed minded and stands for a large part of our society. People need to find out what soccer actually is and what it is about, before they go and make their decision about it, because most people are just going along with the flow and what everyone else is saying!

WHO WON?!?! I bet you’re wondering and the winner is ............ GROUP TWO - Klosterman is an Idiot!
We agreed with group two that soccer is a tough sport and it's not given enough credit, we also liked that they stayed on course as to why they thought Klosterman was an idiot, while group one kind of strayed from their main point, focusing more on other sports, then the main point of saying why Chuck was a genius, but either way both teams did well with their arguments.

  1. The "Klosterman is a Genius" group seems to be following Klosterman himself there. Klosterman, after all, focuses on other sports a lot more than he does soccer, even when he claims to be discussing soccer.
